Drainage

Drainage is the management of surface and subsurface water so it flows away from where it can cause damage. It combines grading, French drains, catch basins, downspout extensions, and permeable materials to prevent pooling, erosion, and soggy soil. Poor drainage drowns plant roots, undermines hardscape, and can direct water toward foundations, so it is a foundational concern in landscape planning.

Why it matters on Nantucket

Nantucket's sandy soil drains quickly, but low-lying areas, high water tables near the shore, and intense nor'easter rains can still overwhelm a site. Thoughtful drainage protects both plantings and the stone patios and walls that anchor an island landscape.
